Dismantling the father's house?

Abstract The traditional master–apprentice architecture of doctoral supervision is undoubtedly undergoing change. In the anglophone world, father's house with its almost exclusively male occupants was first established in late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It persisted, largely undisputed, until final decades century, when numbers bloomed throughout West more women (and others) took occupancy as students supervisors (advisors). this article, I sketch gendered origins then review extant (anglophone) literature on supervisors. examining that small body work, ask two questions: What are doing to supervision? And woman supervisor really ‘just a man’? My conclusions underscore complexity ongoing efforts dismantle supervision.
